So, where were we? Oh yes. We topped off the fuel at Jordan Point yesterday and made it out and down the river unscathed. It was a beautiful day to be on the water and the Synovia trawled down the James like a champ. Cap’t Rehab said he knew a guy with a dock and power so our goal was to make it to His Honor’s place in time to cook dinner. And that is just what we did.
We tied up at the dock, set up the grill and soon we were sipping martinis on the upper deck (sounds posh, no?) while the captain changed his boating hat for a chef’s hat and started the steaks. I can probably count on one hand the dinner parties I have been to that were more fun than this one. Steak, new potatoes and a corn and asparagus dish. Throw in some red wine, great conversation and a beautiful evening on the river and it doesn’t get much better.
It was such a good night that I let Cap’t Rehab and Bilge Boy talk me into sleeping on the hammock up top. It was a little more precarious than I anticipated and I may have fallen out the first time I tried to get in. (But in any event I am sure that If you hear the story from Bilge Boy he will exaggerate it all some what.) The rest of the night passed uneventfully and the morning dawned clear and cool and the hammock was great place to wake up.
His Honor came back down to the dock for breakfast. No doubt because he heard we were having blueberry/pomegranate pancakes. And that, by the way, is a great way to start a day. And so after a leisurely breakfast we stowed everything, slipped the lines and we are back on the river. Running with the tide has given us an extra knot or two for speed, but I am sure will will give that up once the tide turns. But for now we are zipping along (it’s fast for us anyway) towards Portsmouth and an expected tie up at the Tidewater Yacht marina this evening.
