Hello geocachers…

So I haven’t done a search or anything. but I feel like we have talked about geocaching before. If not (or you missed that one) let me direct you here. Check that out and come on back. Lately I have been working with the good folks at Real Deal Brazil on a geocaching team. (Good ahead and check that site out too.) And we are underway! So far there are three of us on the team and we are starting to spread the word. RDB…

Upgrade your weekend…

It is worth the reminder that not all adventuring takes ton of planning and preparation. Sometimes all wee need to do is shift one part of our weekend to turn it into an adventure. I reminded myself of that this past weekend. I felt that I needed a camping weekend but just wasn’t up for a ton of planning and researching. I just wanted to get out for the weekend. So why not camp close to home? I think that since camping close to home…

Finished standing up…

Races completed and I finished the way I like to… vertically. One could be picky and wish that I had run the half about 10 minutes faster, but it was Ocracoke and that doesn’t always lead to early nights, if you get my drift. Anyway, to be super racer or anything, but the training plan called for 3 mile run the day before the race, and there was a 5k also, so why not get two tee shirts. A tee shirt and a cause an…

#OptOutside

I really enjoyed the #OptOutside movement this past week. Thanksgiving is great and there is a lot to be said for a wonderful meal and family gathered. But to then immediately slam that into a huge shopping frenzy? Too much for me. Three years ago I started taking a camping trip for the long Thanksgiving weekend. Dinner with the family on Thursday and they off to the wild blue on Friday morning. The first year I was in a different State Parks every night. That…

Arrgh… here there be pirates!

So here is a reason to go to Ocracoke (as if you needed another one). Halloween weekend is pirate time. And they are all over the island. Most of our trivia team (which seems to do a lot more than play trivia together) headed out to the island for the weekend. We camped at the Beachcomber campground, which was as good as always, and mingled with the pirates. They had pirates from all over camping and teaching folks about life in those times. There was…

An unplugged weekend (almost)…

What a grand weekend. Hiking around Pilot Mountain State Park and visiting TV Americana (the nearby Mt. Airy being Mayberry and Pilot Mountain being Mount Pilot). But mostly it was just being away from the daily that made it great. Hiking Saturday I took my phone for the GPS functionality and then found out I was out a range. What a great thing to discover. And it made me think about unplugged weekends. I have read about unplugged time away from good sources (among them Whitney…

Too long…

Yes, it has been too long. I have not heeded Goethe’s advice and I have let the things that matter the most be at the mercy of the things that matter the least. Now don’t get me wrong, I am huge fan of earning a living, it is just that sometimes things pile up. It’s like a commitment annuity. Well, kind of like that. And so, this is a reset weekend. Time to relax, take the long view, hike, photograph and most of all just…

Traditions…

For the most part I like traditions. And this is one of my favorites. This weekend is my official opening to the camping/racing season. And it happens at the happiest place on earth. No, not that one. This is race weekend on Ocracoke. My tradition is to get the camping gear out of winter storage and head out to the Beachcomber Campground. The campground is situated right near the start and after party location and is a wonderful place to base an island adventure. The…

Here comes summer…

I feel like we turned a corner to the start of summer this weekend. The weather was great, PirateFest happened and the annual call of REI dividends and coupons was answered. While I am not the best in the world at delayed gratification I do like to see how things can evolve some times. Several years ago I started walking/jogging/running to get off the couch and loose some weight. I then decided I had a bunch of AmEx points from countless expense reports so why…
